I am more optimistic. It won’t happen.
Imagine the scenario.
Trump, to his military chief (MC)- We need to attack Syria and take out Assad.
MC- That will mean war with Russia, a nuclear power, and they have said they will attack the carriers of the missiles as well as the missiles. Do I have the authority to attack Russian assets ?
Trump- Sure
MC- The Russians have nuclear weapons and could use them. Are you prepared to authorise the use of nuclear weapons on Russia ?
Trump- No need to nuclear. Keep it non nuclear.
MC- We may have no choice but to go nuclear. We could lose if we don’t go nuclear.
Trump- What are our chances of winning a nuclear war.
MC- Fairly good. Best case scenario we could destroy 80% of Russia with a US loss of only 50%.
Trump- Worst case ?
MC- We lose 80%, they lose 50%.
Trump- Thank you.
MC- What are my orders, Sir ?
Trump- You may leave now.
I doubt it will happen.
